During the reign of Queen Victoria in England, the language of flowers and herbs was as important as being well dressed. A young man could either please or displease a lady by his qift of flowers.
Flowers conveyed messages of love or dislike depending upon which ones were given. They had a silent meaning of their very own, and could say what was not dared to be spoken…
Here I cut out many letters and placed them as if on a stage singing their story. The various subtle colours and cast shadows create an alluring effect which simply come about due to the different time of day that the photograph was taken.
Here are a few examples of herbs and what they meant in the 19th century.
